OPAZ Hosts National Workshop to Mark World Creativity and Innovation Day

In recognition of World Creativity and Innovation Day, observed annually on April 21, the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ), in collaboration with the Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit and the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, organized a national workshop dedicated to fostering innovation-driven economic growth.
Held under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Ali bin Masoud Al Sunaidy, Chairman of OPAZ, the event brought together senior officials, industry leaders, and professionals, reflecting OPAZ’s steadfast commitment to harnessing innovation and creativity as fundamental pillars in shaping a sustainable and resilient future for Oman.
The workshop focused on the pivotal role of scientific research and innovation in realizing the objectives outlined in Oman Vision 2040. Discussions explored the transformative impact of technological advancements on special economic and free zones, with an emphasis on integrating cutting-edge innovations to enhance competitiveness and sustainability in industrial sectors.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Jameela bint Ali Al-Hinai, Oman’s official representative to UNESCO and ISESCO, underscored the significance of leveraging innovation to strengthen special economic zones. She highlighted the critical role of technology-driven solutions in ensuring long-term viability and positioning Oman as a leader in industrial development. Dr. Al Hinai also explored the potential synergies between industrial zones and scientific parks, emphasizing how innovation-led investments can elevate Oman’s standing in the Global Innovation Index and yield sustained economic benefits.
Adel bin Ibrahim Al-Fazari, Assistant Director of the Scientific Publishing Department at the Ministry, presented an overview of Oman’s key national research and innovation initiatives. He emphasized that innovation is no longer an option but a strategic necessity, playing an essential role in both economic and social advancement. Al-Fazari stressed the importance of institutional collaboration, advocating for a robust national ecosystem that nurtures creativity, knowledge-sharing, and cross-sector innovation.
It's worth noting that the Authority has established a Quality and Innovation Department within its organizational structure from the outset, affirming its commitment to supporting the national innovation system and strengthening partnerships between government and academic entities, ensuring the utilization of national energies and enabling them to effectively contribute to the sustainable development process. It also highlighted the importance of continuing to organize such knowledge-based programs, which will open new horizons for creative thinking.
